NHL 2021 Proposed Schedule

The 2021 NHL season is up in the air right now, and if it were up to me I would do the bubble system again, this time in 8 Canadian cities (with Quebec City lending a hand). Teams will play within their conference.

48 games broken up into 4 sessions, 12 games each. Each session will take place in a different bubble city for every team. The above image is the first session, the remaining 3 sessions would see all the teams shuffled around within their conference.

All games will be against opponents in the same conference. There are 4 western bubble cities, 4 eastern bubble cities. Teams will play each other 4 times in each session (in the Winnipeg bubble, teams will play each other 6 times). The schedule:

  • First Session: Bubble City A – 12 games (followed by 10-day break)
  • Second Session: Bubble City B – 12 games (followed by 10-day break)
  • Third Session: Bubble City C – 12 games (followed by 10-day break)
  • Fourth Session: Bubble City D – 12 games (followed by 3-day break)
  • Playoffs will take place in all 8 bubble cities, to prevent the triple OT madness that happened this year.

Each session will take about 24 – 26 days. The 10-day breaks between sessions will allow players to visit their families, and to travel between the bubble cities. The shorter 3-day break before the playoffs is just for travel. So this season will still take about 6 and a half months to play.
